Free clinic day 3 at Kibarani

Report by Signe Møller, July 26, 2008

On July 26, we had our 3rd and by far our biggest Free Clinic Day in Kibarani. The first 2 times we have held FCD, the circumstances have been a little chaotic, due to rain and other challenges, but this time we managed to organize it so that we could use the two rooms so that the clinic was held in one and the feeding of the children in the other.

A bunch of volunteers showed up to help during the day, for foreign and locals. Our regular nurse Patricia had arranged for doctors, other nurses and nurse assistants to come and help out and our 2 cooks Ruth and Margareth started preparing food from very early in the morning to all the children, we anticipated would show.

Free Clinic Day 3

We were out there from 9 am - 6 pm, we fed 200 children and treated between 200 - 250 children and adults.

All the children were treated for worms and received antimalarial medication and the sicknesses and diseases that primarily were treated besides that were typhoid, pneumonia, upper respiratory tract infections, diarrhoea, septic and chronic wounds, scabies, skin diseases, eye infections, sexually transmitted diseases (in some cases among the children) asthma, burn wounds, chicken pox, fungal infections, ring worm and ear infections.

Free Clinic Day 3

Some we could treat on site, some were referred to the hospital and some needed to come back and see Patricia the following week.

Unfortunately we couldn't treat everybody, about 20 people we had to ask to come back, but never the less we considered the day a big success.

The entire day, medicine and food for everybody ended up costing app. Ksh 35000 (app. 300 GBP).
