1st aid course in Kibarani

On September 19, 2009 and Kibarani had a visit from Kenya Red Cross.

Here are some pictures of our first aid class. It was a really good day. Teacher Carol and assistant Geoffrey were there, both taking notes. Even Florence (volunteer) was taking notes!

The day began at 10.30am even though the poster read - and the teacher had said to the parents it was at 9. Kenya Red Cross were there at 9. Geoffrey and Carol helped me summon the parents from their houses and we began at 10.30.

The parents, about 40 of them, were divided into small groups and given paper and pen. They were then told to discuss and write down the most common health problems they experienced in Kibarani. The Red Cross teachers walked around and discussed with the group in the meanwhile.

Then each group came to the black board and presented their notes. There were of course problems that all the groups had noted and these were the ones that we went through with the health officer.

These were:
Fainting/dizziness
Malaria
Cholera
Burns/cuts
Fractures
Epilepsy
Heart burn/high blood pressure

The next two hours were spent going through these subjects one by one. All the parents were very interested and the health officer was good at including them in the process.

All of the parents expressed that they had learned something from the day and 100% to the Children extend great thanks to Kenya Red Cross (http://www.kenyaredcross.org/) for this day and hope to collaborate further in the future.
