Free clinic day 2 at KibaraniReport by Signe Møller, July 7, 2008 |
On Saturday June 7th, 100% to the Children sponsored the second Free Clinic Day in Kibarani and had a meeting with the Chief and the Community Council. Even though it rained heavily to begin with, making it hard to cook as we don't have a roof, it finally stopped, and the cooks managed to cook food for about 150 children. Many of the mothers from the village and the dump site found their way to the school and after 8 hours hard work especially by our tireless nurse and her assistant, everybody had been treated and given medicine or referrals. Because of the large turnout, it was a bit chaotic in the room but we estimate the number of patients treated to app. 50.
The children were given de-worming pills again and many of them had wounds and infections. Infected wounds are often very hard to get rid off, due to poor hygienic conditions in Kibarani. Additionally it is the rain season, which means that there are a lot of puddles and around the water many flies and mosquitoes. They cause diarrhoea and malaria, which is very hard on the littlest ones in the community. The Chief, a representative of the community council and myself had a meeting about 100% to the Children's level of engagement in Kibarani and I presented to them a letter of commitment, which we now finalizing and we hope to sign in July when I come back. We had bought a football and a long rope, so we could have a rope pulling contest, to the children's great joy. All in all it was a great day, it is to this date still a rush to see how the children open up to us and each other when they are shown love and how their energy changes when they are fed. The whole day ended up costing us KES 22.500 = GBP 185, which is less than a pound per person treated and/or fed. • Read more about the Kibarani Dump Site Children and Nursery School Project• Support the Kibarani Dump Site Children and Nursery School |
